YELLOW BALL

(KELTAINEN PALLO)

Tuomas Timosen’s play “The Yellow Ball or Finnish Loneliness” is a caricatured, character-cavalcade comedy that explores recognizable stereotypical roles in our society.

In the play, a small amateur theater group is rehearsing an experimental play titled The Yellow Ball. With only a week left until the premiere and not a single ticket sold, the theater is suddenly visited by six recognizable Finnish caricature characters: Honest Worker, Single Mother, Backroom Boy, Lapland Girl, Bitter Old Person, Marginalized Person, Goth, Asylum Seeker, and a “Pissis” searching for a director “Smeetsi” to write their story.

The play questions whether the roles present in our society need to be updated or completely removed so that people can live freely beyond these roles. How deep must we dig to recognize the need for or offer help? What holds us back? How can we increase the sense of belonging among Finns? What kind of Finland do we want, and what actions does it require?
