BROKEN LANGUAGE

(KIELIRIKOT)

Broken language (Kielirikot)

Kielirikot (Broken language) was a documentary theater performance that explored language barriers, difficulties in expression, and the prejudices associated with meeting others. The project team started the project in June 2016 with a one-week language course for asylum seekers living at the Aavaranta reception center. The language course was fully documented. Additionally, the theater organized monthly JallaJalla! parties where people danced and interacted with one another. All material was recorded.

The project examined the similarities and differences in cultural identities among people with different linguistic backgrounds and native languages. The team faced unfamiliar and challenging situations and confronted their own fears and prejudices. Through these experiences, their perspectives on their own and others’ cultural identities were broadened and enriched. At least, this is what we believe. The documentary theater performance Kielirikot was based on these materials.
