Research Coordinator of the Reality Research Center: EMOTIONS 2009
The activities of the Reality Research Center are built around an annual research plan. The research plan is the main theme of artistic activities, which is explored in depth. Our research plan was “Emotions: A Social Perspective on Emotions and Their Presentation and Expression in Performances.” The research coordinators were responsible for the plan and its implementation. In addition to myself, the research coordinators were Katariina Numminen and Titta Halinen.

EMOTION CLUBS IN DUBROVNIK
We organized six Emotion Clubs at the Dubrovnik restaurant (Eerikinkatu 11). Each club had its own theme and associated emotions, performances, and discussions with interesting speakers from various fields. There was also casual mingling, a DJ, and charming club hostesses. The themes of the clubs were: Comfort, Nostalgia, Joy, Anger, Shame, and Love.
RICHARD III 1.2.
Richard III 1.2. continued the Reality Research Center’s earlier studies of urban spaces as stages. Our goal was to examine the interaction between the reality of a place, its atmosphere, and theatre. How do they intertwine? How does the city’s infrastructure affect our emotions? How does the text of a play transform when the location changes? What emotions arise when the play is integrated into the city’s environment? In 2009, we presented the second scene of the first act of Shakespeare’s Richard III in five different locations throughout the city, each time in a public space.
The first performance was held in a metro station as a reading drama, the second in the Ice Park at the Railway Station, the third on a ferry to Suomenlinna, the fourth in Lammassaari, and the fifth at the Sörnäinen flea market.
EMOTIONS PERFORMANCE SERIES
The four-performance series was the main event of the year. Each piece in the series explored emotions from its own research perspective. All the works were presented in the same space and spatial arrangement. The creators of the works were members of the Reality Research Center, supplemented by a few external artists.
